Chapter Twelve
When Bruce Rossiter arrived at Tinton police station next morning, he had the appearance of a man who hadnât slept the previous night. By contrast, Brian Humphreys looked as bright as a button.
The first indignity for Rossiter was having his fingerprints taken. Humphreys seemed to be positively enjoying Rossiterâs discomfort, though. Slater and Norman were watching through the observation window of the interview room.
âI got the feeling this isnât the first time heâs had to represent Bruce Rossiter,â said Slater, as Humphreys stood back with his arms folded, a grin playing around his lips. âMaybe getting dragged into a murder inquiry is a step too far for him and heâs had enough.â
They watched as Ian Becks took Rossiter through the procedure.
âRossiter doesnât seem to be as bothered about having his prints taken as Iâd expected,â said Slater.
âThatâs probably because he knows heâs wiped that phone clean. Wait until you tell him we found prints on the inside. That should get a reaction.â
They waited until Ian Becks had finished before they entered the interview room.
âDid you get your fingerprints taken?â asked Norman.
âYou know damned well I did,â snorted Rossiter.
âWell, youâll be pleased to know it hasnât been a waste of time,â said Slater, smiling. âBecause we found some fingerprints inside the phone on the battery. That should tell us who put the phone together in the first place.â
He was watching Rossiterâs face as he spoke, convinced he was going to get a good reaction, but Rossiter didnât bat an eyelid.
âWell, Iâve already told you it wasnât me,â said Rossiter. âAnd my fingerprints will prove it.â
âYouâre very confident about that,â said Norman, and Slater could tell he was surprised. He was too.
âYes, because I know Iâm right,â said Rossiter, smiling calmly at them.
And at that moment, Slater began to think that maybe he wasnât bluffing. But surely he must have been lying about the phone. There was no way it had been planted. It had to be his phone. Didnât it?
âWeâll have confirmation of that soon enough,â said Norman. âOur little forensics team are very good. Theyâll be working on it right now. In the meantime, we have some questions weâd like you to answer.â
âYes,â said Rossiter, impatiently. âThatâs why Iâm here when I should be at work. Now, can we get on with it, please?â
âWhen we spoke yesterday, we asked you if you had an intimate relationship with Diana Woodsââ
âAh. Yes,â said Rossiter. âI may not have been very honest when I gave my answer.â
âYou may not have been very honest,â echoed Slater. âDoes that mean you lied to us?â
âI prefer to call it being economical with the truth. Now Iâve spoken to my solicitor I can see that was the wrong thing to do.â
âSo you did lie to us,â said Norman. âSo how about you tell us the truth now.â
âThe thing is my wife mustnât get to hear about this. Iâm sure you can see this would be very embarrassing for me if it did get out. You will
